The plantar fascia is a wonderfully-formed, multi-tasking band of connective tissue that surrounds the muscles on the bottom of the foot, connects the heel bone to the ball of the foot, supports the arch, safeguards the foot, and absorbs shock. As you can see, the healthy function of the plantar fascia is essential for pain-free movement of the foot.

There are many factors that contribute to the development of Plantar Fascitis. One factor is short and tight calf muscles. When calf muscles get short and tight they exert a strong pull on the back of the heel bone, producing undue stress on the smaller and weaker plantar muscles and fascia. What causes calf muscles to get short and tight? Aside from aerobics, volleyball, running, basketball, tennis, and similar activities that involve running and jumping, the wearing of high heels can create the condition.

Sudden strenuous activity after a period of prolonged inactivity can contribute to Plantar Fascitis, as can such factors as incorrect walking patterns (e.g., over-pronation), improper footwear, walking on hard or uneven surfaces (particularly with bare feet), and obesity.

Last week I saw an article on sciencedaily.com about a study done on aged mice raised to develop symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and the boost that caffeine gave to decreasing memory loss. The article began with the angle that “Coffee drinkers may have another reason to pour that extra cup.”  It continued by reporting on a sequence of studies published online July 6 in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease that demonstrated that caffeine significantly decreased abnormal levels of the protein linked to Alzheimer’s disease, both in the brains and in the blood of mice that had developed symptoms of the disease.

But, before you opt to add another cup of coffee to your daily intake, let me, Dr. Jamie Phillips add that also on the website, under “Related Stories,” were a couple of articles reporting on studies that professed to prove the negative effects of caffeine, “Morning Jolt of Caffeine May Mask Serious Sleep Problems,” and “Coffee Consumption Linked To Increased Risk Of Heart Attack For Persons With Certain Gene Variation.”

Nearly every viewpoint, from my experience, particularly when it comes to age-related health issues, can be affirmed, or at least given credence, by other related studies. The “good/bad” studies related to caffeine certainly aren’t, of course, the only ones. Even so, it did get me to thinking about the reasonableness that there will not ever be simply “one thing” that will with absolute certainty help we, humans, to live longer, healthier lives. Humans are dynamic, biological creatures. We aren’t raised in unnatural confinement We are actively engaged in life. And, let’s face it, though Alzheimer’s disease apparently is on the rise, obviously no one has been “bred to develop symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease,” therefore caffeine isn’t absolutely the “one thing” that is going to prevent or reverse it.

The human body is an exquisite, intricate system that is designed to function homeostasis or balance. It is likely, then, that good health has more to do with a healthy, balanced approach to living, as opposed to our being briefly convinced by the latest health study and “doing” or “overdoing” one specific thing fooling ourselves into believing that it will reverse all of the other excessive and unhealthy things we have done to our bodies.

As a Santa Barbara chiropractor, it is my belief that every single day we have an opportunity to choose healthfully for our body, to decide what will help us to live longer, healthier lives. When it comes to what is good for our body, we know what truly “feels” right and what doesn’t. Scoliosis: An Introduction

When the body is seen from behind, a normal spine looks straight without much deviation from side-to-side. Therefore, if the spine is observed to have a lateral, or side-to-side, curvature, the individual might have a condition called scoliosis.This affliction frequently gives the appearance of the person leaning to one side although it should not be confused with unsatisfactory posture. Scoliosis is a puzzling deformity that is characterized by both lateral curvature and rotation of the vertebra often causing a symptomatic “rib hump” in the mid or thoracic spine. This is created by the vertebrae in the zone of the major curve rotating toward the concavity and pushing their attached ribs posterior thus creating the distinctive rib hump seen in thoracic scoliosis. If the thoracic curve and rib rotation are severe, greater than 70 degrees, pulmonary and cardiac function can be interfered with. Frequently later in life in untreated severe idiopathic infantile and juvenile scoliosis patients, this amount of curve and resulting cardiac and pulmonary changes can be life threatening.

Anatomy

If you were to observe the trunk from a side view, the spine would disclose four normal curves: the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacral. The thoracic, in the chest area, has a normal round curve, “reversed C,” called a kyphosis, while in the lower spine there is a healthy “C” curve, known as swayback or lordosis. Hyperlordosis is the term used to describe increased swayback, while increased kyphosis in the thoracic spine is called hyperkyphosis. Changes from normal that are visible from a side view generally accompany scoliosis changes. Postural exercises can correct some round back deformities that are simply due to poor posture. A small number of patients with kyphosis have more rigid deformities than the postural type, which are coincidental with vertebral deformity. This type of deformity, called Scheuermann’s kyphosis, is much more difficult to treat than postural kyphosis, and it’s cause is unknown.

Even a nonprofessional can help to identify a child or adult with scoliosis simply by observing the person in a standing position, preferably bare-chested and in shorts, and observing the following:

  • One shoulder may be higher than the other.
  • One scapula (shoulder blade) may be higher or more prominent than the other.
  • There may be more space between the arm and the body on one side when the arms hang loosely at the side.
  • One hip may seem to be more elevated or more prominent than the other.
  • The head is not aligned with the pelvis.
  • One side of the back appears more elevated than the other when the individual is observed from the rear and asked to flex forward until the the spine is horizontal.

There are many different roots and many types of scoliosis, however the most prevalent, by far, is Idiopathic Scoliosis, which accounts for approximately 85 % of all cases. “Idiopathic” means “no known cause” and is witnessed with equal occurrence in boys and girls in the mild or low curve magnitudes. This affliction can be sub-classified into infantile, juvenile and adolescent types, based upon the age of onset. Idiopathic Scoliosis may be due to genetic or hereditary influences as it commonly runs in families. Braces normally will not make the spine completely straight, and cannot always keep a curve from increasing. However, bracing is effectual in stopping curve progression in a significant portion of skeletally-immature adolescents.

Scoliosis has no simple solution. The majority of cases, even though frequently monitored, are not actively treated. Severe conditions are infrequently treated surgically, but the common medical treatment for moderate cases is a brace. You may want to see your local chiropractor first.

The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) endorses the AAP on the guidelines and underlines that chiropractic treatment is a “good first option” for treating ear infection conservatively. “Doctors of chiropractic have been treating children for decades with great success – helping them to avoid painful ear infections, antibiotic overuse and resistance, and ear tube surgery,” said ACA President Donald Krippendorf, DC. “Particularly when dealing with young children, drugs and surgery should be an absolute last resort.”
